A New Look: The Downtown BID’s Streetscape and Streetlight Project

As part of the Downtown BID’s Streetscape and Streetlight project, the District Department of Transportation (DDOT) will begin construction on several Downtown streets on or about December 21 and December 28, weather permitting.

DDOT is using $5.5 million in federal stimulus funds to implement a comprehensive Downtown streetscape project developed in conjunction with the BID. The project will take a year to complete and will include new streetlights, concrete pavers and brick sidewalks, curbs, trees and tree boxes, gutters and American with Disabilities Act (ADA) ramps, bike racks, trashcans and recycling bins.

Construction will take place on roadways from 9:30 am to 3:30 pm and on sidewalks from 7:00 am to 5:30 pm at the following times and locations:

December 14 through January 31
14th Street NW, between Thomas Circle and K Streets 

December 21 through January 31
8th Street NW, between H and I Streets

December 21 through February 15
5th Street NW, between G and H Streets                                     

December 28 through February 15
9th Street NW, between I and K Streets

December 28 through February 28
7th Street NW, between E and F Streets
7th Street NW, between G and H Streets

Traffic and parking may be affected. However, a minimum of one lane of traffic in both directions will be maintained at all times during construction. Parking may be restricted in the immediate construction area, although local businesses will be accessible at all times.

Over the next year, most of the streetscape and streetlight work will take place from K Street and Massachusetts Avenue on the north to Pennsylvania and Indiana Avenues on the south and from 5th Street on the east to 9th Street on the west. About 75% of the work on Indiana Avenue and on D and E Streets has been completed.
