The National Museum of Women in the Arts (1250 New York Avenue), NMWA, a DowntownDC BID partner and purveyor of works by women artists in the visual, performing and literary arts, turns 25 in 2012. Congratulations! A classy and grand celebration is on track, starting with the kick-off event, An Evening in Monte Carlo (February 3), replete with a casino, dinner in the galleries, and an auction featuring women artists’ works. Following this soiree: the Royalists to Romantics Opening Reception (February 23), a French-themed salute to women artists from the age of Louis XVI to the Post-Napoleonic Era; the New York Avenue Sculpture Project Dedication (March 8), the second installation in the NMWA’s outdoor gallery showcasing contemporary works by world-renowned women artists; and The Silver Anniversary Gala (April 27), the museum’s signature philanthropic event, featuring an auction, cocktails, dinner, and dancing.

The NMWA honors women artists of the past, promotes the accomplishments of women artists of the present, and helps assure the place of women artists in the future. Wilhelmina Cole Holladay, an author, arts patron and collector, founded the museum, housed in a former Masonic temple, as a private, non-profit organization in 1981 and opened it in 1987. NMWA’s collection features more than 4,000 works by more than 1,000 artists. In 2009, the museum teamed with the BID, the DC Office of Planning (OP) and other agencies to begin work on the sculpture project.
