An interactive, online map telling the story of the trees of the Downtown DC Business Improvement District (BID) beat out 40 other competitors to win the People’s Choice Award at the recent ESRI Mid-Atlantic User Conference.

DowntownDC BID’s Brian Gober, a Geographic Information Systems (GIS) manager, received the award for his story map entitled “Trees of the Downtown DC BID.” The People’s Choice Award was voted on by attendees at the Mid-Atlantic User Conference, which was held in Baltimore, Maryland, December 2-4. There were roughly 40 different digital maps on display at the conference.

Story maps combine intelligent web maps with web applications and templates that incorporate text, multimedia, and interactive functions. Story maps inform, educate, entertain, and inspire people about a wide variety of topics.

The Downtown tree species story map was created using ArcGIS Online generated by ESRI, one of the largest geospatial entities in the world. The trees story map explores the diversity of the over 3,800 trees contained in the DowntownDC BID’s 138-block area. The story map is part of a partnership between the BID and the Urban Forestry Administration (UFA), which work together to maintain Downtown tree health and safety and protect its green spaces.

Gober also recently received recognition from the GIS Certification Institute as a Certified Geographic Information Systems (GIS) Professional and now holds the title of GISP.
