Changing how Washingtonians Eat

–You gotta love FRESHFarm Markets, which operates 10 producer-only farmers’ markets in the Washington metropolitan area, including the Penn Quarter and by the White House markets in Downtown. Now, there’s cause to celebrate, too, as the region’s leading voice for farmers’ markets gets ready to celebrate 15 years connecting the city and the country through healthy fare. Are we excited? You bet! We’re particularly eager to try out the six new producers joining the Penn Quarter market, reopening on 8th Street between D and E streets on March 22 and offering up tasty tidbits and other wonderful ware every Thursday from 3:00 pm to 7:00 pm through December 20.

This year’s newcomers: Soupergirl!, serving vegan soups and salads, and Gordy’s Pickle Jar, the prize-winning pickle people (say that three times!)—both DC-based producers. Also, expect to see Gunpowder Bison, dishing out all cuts; The Red Zebra, operating a mobile wood-fired pizza oven; Evensong Farm, offering pasture-raised meats, eggs and herbs; and Garner’s Produce, featuring goods throughout the market season. They hail from surrounding Maryland and Virginia markets.

The Penn Quarter market will accept Supplemental Nutrition Assistant Program (SNAP) food cards and provide Matching Dollars for the first time this year. Matching Dollars will be available to persons qualifying to receive an additional $15 (up from $10 last season, in honor of FRESHFarm’s 15th anniversary) in SNAP eligible foods at the market. In addition, to highlight its upcoming milestone, FRESHFarm Markets will hold a 15th Anniversary Week celebration from July 10 to July 15 with weeklong activities at all of its markets.

The FRESHFarm Market by the White House on Vermont Avenue between H and I streets will return on May 3 and open every Thursday until October 25. Note that its hours have changed this year and the market will be open during lunch only–from 11:00 am to 2:30 pm.
