Visitors to Union Station now have an easy, affordable and direct connection to the National Mall through DowntownDC following the DC Circulator’s June 14 launch of a 15-stop National Mall bus route.

For the DC Circulator price of $1, guests can now easily travel to some of the biggest attractions on the Mall, including the Washington Monument, the National Air and Space Museum, the National Gallery and the Lincoln Memorial, where Mayor Muriel Bowser cut the ribbon to kick off service on Friday.

“Improving and diversifying transportation options in the District of Columbia remains a top priority of my administration,” Bowser said at Friday’s launch event. “The DC Circulator’s expansion is a win for the District, its residents and visitors as a sustainable solution for moving people around the National Mall and into our unique and diverse neighborhoods. This route will provide people with greater access to the nation’s most iconic monuments, memorials and museums while boosting economic activity in the District.”

Bowser noted that many entities, including the District Department of Transportation, the National Park Service and DC Surface Transit, Inc., join together to support the DC Circulator to keep maintenance costs down, fares low and continue to offer 10-minute headways on DC Circulator for every rider.

The District Department of Transportation announced Friday that new Circulator buses will have USB charging stations under each seat as well as wifi for passengers.

This year marks the 10th anniversary of the DC Circulator system, which today provides more than 5 million trips per year through a fleet of 67 buses on 136 stops. The National Mall route is the sixth DC Circulator route currently in operation.

For DowntownDC, the new National Mall route overall will bring more consumers into Downtown each day.

“Connecting the National Mall to the rest of the city with affordable, convenient surface transit was the impetus for launching DC Circulator service in 2005,” said DC Surface Transit President Richard H. Bradley, Executive Director of the DowntownDC Business Improvement District (BID). “Opening our local economy with this service to the millions of tourists who visit the National Mall each year is a win for both the city and for the visitor experience in Washington, D.C.”

The DowntownDC BID supports the DC Circulator as a sustainable form of transportation.

The Circulator is distinguished from other surface public transportation by its inexpensive fares and frequent service.
