Love movies? Interested in the environment? Soon, you’ll have the opportunity to check out some of the best and most compelling new films available on sustainability at the 22nd Environmental Film Festival in the Nation’s Capital, held March 18-30.

And most are free.

The theme of the 2014 festival is “Our Cities, Our Planet,” which is billed as an examination of “challenges posed by Earth’s urban environments and the efforts of the world’s cities to balance environmental and economic needs.”

The annual non-profit festival has grown into one of the world’s largest showcases of environmental film and offers attendees a variety of programs including documentaries, shorts, narratives, animation, children’s films, archival and experimental work. Many of the screenings include discussions with special guests and filmmakers.

The films will be screened in venues across the city in theaters, museums, libraries, embassies, and universities. Many DowntownDC venues are hosting screenings, including: Landmark E Street Cinema (555 11th Street NW); the Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial Library (901 G Street NW); the National Museum of Women in the Arts (1250 New York Ave NW); and the National Building Museum (401 F Street NW).

The full festival program was released Feb. 28 and is available online at: http://www.dcenvironmentalfilmfest.org/films. Screenings are free, but registration is encouraged for select showings.

The kickoff launch party will be held March 13 at 7:30 p.m. at the Warner Theater (513 13th Street NW). Pre-sale tickets for that event cost $25 and may be purchased online at: http://2014launchparty.bpt.me.
