The DowntownDC Business Improvement District (BID) and Georgetown University’s master’s in Urban & Regional Planning (URP) program formally established an exciting relationship to coordinate their research agendas in a way that will benefit both parties.

The BID and the URP program—located at Georgetown’s downtown D.C. campus at the School of Continuing Studies (640 Massachusetts Avenue NW)share many common interests associated with new strategies to diversify the local economy and further enhance DowntownDC. The BID works on many initiatives such as the DowntownDC ecoDistrict, Smart Cities, planning at DowntownDC’s east end, wayfinding, placemaking and more.

The agreement will afford both Georgetown University and the BID new opportunities to collaborate on interdisciplinary research, coordinate faculty and student research projects and jointly promote and distribute research findings to key stakeholders.

“DowntownDC is a globally significant case study of how to plan, implement and manage a vital mixed-use urban core. We are keenly interested in advancing the knowledge and professional practices associated with this ongoing story of innovation and success. By building a stronger bridge between the University and the BID, we will advance and disseminate the ideas, tools and strategies of great city-building,” commented Uwe Brandes, Executive Director of the Urban & Regional Planning program.

“The DowntownDC BID is excited to join with Georgetown University, a great, longstanding Washington institution, and we are eager to see what this collaboration will yield,” said BID Executive Director Richard H. Bradley.
