DowntownDC BID Safety/Hospitality SAM Crystal Saunders was featured this week in a Scripps-Howard Foundation Wire series about unique jobs in Washington, D.C.

Reporter Kate Winkle shadowed Saunders as she conducted a day of work in Downtown, created a video slideshow of the experience and interviewed Saunders about her work.

“The best part of my job is actually helping the folks, meeting different people that visit from all over the world,” Saunders told Winkle. “It’s just an experience to see someone come here and they’re happy to have us out here to help them.”

The BID currently employs 50 Maintenance SAMs who help maintain the cleanliness and functionality of streets, sidewalks, parks and other fixtures in Downtown, and 37 Safety/Hospitality SAMs.

“During the peak months of June through September, SAMs assist between 18,000 and 19,000 residents and visitors per month,” Winkle wrote.
