The Penn Quarter FreshFarm Farmers’ Market returned to the north end of 8th Street, between D and E Streets, on Thursday, April 2. The outdoor market has delighted workers and residents since 2003 and will continue this season every Thursday from 3:00 pm to 7:00 pm, through December 17.

Chesapeake Bay watershed region farmers and producers will sell an array of fresh produce, seasonal soups and pastries, handmade soaps, plants, flowers and meat at the market. Workers and residents who visit on Thursdays will be able to purchase sustainable and healthy food shipped from within 200 miles of DC. Several local favorites will return this year, including Anchor Nursery, Blue Ridge Dairy and the Bread Ovens at Quail Creek Farm. Three newcomers—Mountain View Farms, Red Apron Butcher Shop and Springfield Farm of Kent County—have been added. Other offerings: wine tastings, Chef at Market demonstrations—Robert Weland, executive chef of Poste Brasserie (555 8th Street), will kick off the first chef demonstration of the season on Opening Day, April 2, along with a “chocolate challenge” hosted by Divine Chocolate, a fair trade chocolate company owned by farmers in Ghana—visits by cookbook authors and other special events.
