More Circulator Changes

The people have spoken. Not only will change come to the DC Circulator’s Convention Center-SW Waterfront route, but beginning Monday, October 3, other modifications will greet workers, residents, and visitors as well.

For one, service on the successful surface transit system’s Union Station-Navy Yard line will be rerouted near Union Station to ensure a more direct connection from the Yard to the Station. Thus, buses will no longer trek west on Constitution Avenue and north on Louisiana Avenue to reach the Station. Instead, they will stop adjacent to the Station at the flag poles on Columbus Circle before turning right on F Street, NE, and right on 2nd Street, NE, to Constitution Avenue. Service on the Union Station garage level will end, as will stops located on Louisiana Avenue and D Streets.

In addition, the Georgetown-Union Station and Dupont-Georgetown-Rosslyn routes will change. Several closely spaced stops either will be combined—resulting, perhaps, in an extra walk of one or two blocks—or eliminated. This will speed up bus service and aid in keeping buses on their 10-minute-interval track. Also, expect a stop to be added at the very end of the Georgetown-Union Station route, where it turns around on 35th Street.

And, finally, the Circulator will add a new route with service east of the Anacostia River, as expected. Buses will run from the Potomac Avenue Metrorail Station to Skyland via Barracks Row.

All changes are based on ridership numbers and community input gained at several public meetings following the release earlier this year of the District Department of Transportation’s (DDOT) comprehensive Transit Development Plan. The plan was designed to guide the six-year-old bus line’s growth over the next 10-years.
