We knew they were coming, and now they’re here. District Taco (1309 F Street), The Local Vine Cellar (425 11th Street) and the Pho DC Deli (608 H Street) all opened last month, filling in ground floor retail space and adding variety to the Downtown streetscape. Currently, 91% of street level space is occupied, but 18% is occupied by non-retail users, 40% with food and beverage businesses and only 26% with shoppers’ goods such as clothing, books and other items, according to the DowntownDC BID’s 2011 State of Downtown report released in April. District Taco, the Virginia-based taco chain, opened with lines going out the door. The Local Vine Cellar, whose ambience is more reminiscent of a Napa Valley winery cellar than a retail store, occupies 1,296 square feet of space. Pho DC Deli serves steamed buns, bubble tea and other fare in Chinatown and is operated by the owners of Pho DC restaurant, the year-old Vietnamese restaurant dominated by Asian and French influences.
