Penn Social (801 E Street), the social club that offers karaoke, live performances and Comedy and Music Open Mics, welcomed the DowntownDC BID’s Safety/Hospitality and Maintenance employees (SAMs) for their August SAM of the Month meeting.

Paul Schorsch, Penn Social’s events coordinator, gave the SAMs a rundown of the club’s operations, noting “that mostly we’re a bar with pretty cool stuff.” Indeed. Formerly the Riot Act comedy club, Penn Social has

  • 13,000 square feet over two floors
  • threes bars
  • patio seating
  • 30-plus draft beers
  • two stages
  • tons of games, including skee ball, billiards, foosball and shuffle board
  • space for business meetings, company holiday parties and charitable events

In addition to Schorsch, Felix Pagan, assistant general manager of Crunch Fitness (555 12th Street), spoke briefly to the SAMs about staying fit. He showed them some stretches that can be done while they’re on the job patrolling and cleaning Downtown streets.

BID employees Ebony Walton and David Riedman also spoke. Walton, the BID’s events coordinator, gave an update on Workout Wednesdays, the BID’s exercise in the park event conducted in partnership with Crunch, City Sports (715 7th Street) and Freshii (1005 E Street). Riedman, meanwhile, sought role playing volunteers to help with a Department of Homeland Security Surveillance Detection course at the Verizon Center (601 F Street) this month.

During the meeting, two SAMs were recognized as SAMs of the Month for their stellar performance: SAM Safety/Hospitality Team Member Alyce Easterling and Maintenance Team Member Ernest Johns.

Alyce Easterling is an original SAM, and has worked on Downtown streets since 1997. She began as a maintenance employee before spending six years on the dispatch desk. As a hospitality SAM, the native Washingtonian has been awarded for good, friendly customer service. Easterling enjoys travel and is the proud mother of a pre-med student, who has one more year to go!

Ernest Johns joined the SAM Team about three years ago. This is his second SAM of the Month designation. Johns, a DC native and former Pepco (701 9th Street) employee, says being a SAM “helps me in every aspect of my life—and has helped me grow up.” In his spare time, Johns enjoys spending time with his 10-year-old son.

Congratulations to both SAMs!
