Capital Bikeshare celebrated its second anniversary on September 20th, with its ubiquitous red bikes expanding beyond Downtown, DC, and Arlington into Alexandria, which joined the bikesharing system this month. All told, the system recorded more than 2.9 million rides, averaging about 50,000 rides per week, and has 18,000 annual members and 221,000 casual members. Past year highlights include adding 74 new bike stations and expanding 26 for a total of 189 stations. The District Department of Transportation (DDOT) added 40 stations in DC and expanded 26; Arlington added 26 stations; and Alexandria opened eight stations in Old Town. Four DC stations are now located on the National Mall, with more coming. Going forward, DC will add 54 stations by the end of the year and at least an estimated 10% per year over the next five years.
