Spring Marks Return of Farmers Markets to DowntownDC

Spring means fresh produce, artisan foods, cooking demonstrations, Community Supported Agriculture programs (CSAs) and more in DowntownDC as four weekly farmers markets open for the 2015 season.

This year, discover new vendors and features including a new option through FRESHFARM Markets to have your CSA delivered to your office each week.

The first markets set to open in Downtown in 2015 are the two FRESHFARM Markets at Penn Quarter and near the White House. The Penn Quarter market, located on 8th Street NEW between D and E streets, will open April 2 and operate from every Thursday from 3-7 p.m. thereafter. The White House market, located at 810 Vermont Avenue NW, will open April 9 and operate every Thursday from 11 a.m.-2 p.m.

Both markets will feature many local vendors including Black Rock OrchardCibola Farms, Inc.Clear Spring CreameryOld World Breads and Sand Hill Farm at Penn Quarter. At the White House, many vendors with prepared food options will be featured, including Chaia tacos, Soupergirl and Straw Stick & Brick Delicatessen (formerly the Three Little Pigs).

A third FRESHFARM Market will open at CityCenterDC on May 5 and operate every Tuesday at lunchtime from 11 a.m.-2 p.m. Barajas Produce, Capitol Kettle Corn & Popcorn Inc.Evensong Farm and Postmodern Foods LLC are among the returning vendors and Gardots Crumb bakery, O Earth Creamery, HEX Ferments and Harmony Creek Farm will be new additions. HEX will be offering their signature “Butterfly Lime” Kombucha in addition to “Sea Kraut,” miso-based Kimchi and more.

This year, FRESHFARM will also be offering a Community Business Partnership Program CSA in which you can get your CSA share of seasonal produce from several farmers delivered direct to your office every Friday. (At least 10 people must sign up per location. Shares cost $30/week and will be offered for 23 weeks).

The DowntownDC BID is a proud sponsor of FRESHFARM Markets’ three Downtown markets, which the BID supports as a way to promote local agriculture and local business owners and promote healthy options available 24-7 to workers, visitors and residents in DowntownDC as part of the BID’s Healthy Communities initiative.

A fourth market, Capital Harvest on the Plaza (CHoP), will also be returning to DowntownDC this year at the Woodrow Wilson Plaza at the Ronald Reagan Building and International Trade Center (1300 Pennsylvania Avenue NW). CHoP will open May 15 and operate Fridays from 11 a.m.-3 p.m.

Downtown farmers markets are set to open on the following dates and operate on the following schedules:

  • April 2: FRESHFARM Farmers Market in Penn Quarter at 8th Street NW between D and E streets. Open Thursdays from 3-7 p.m. through Dec. 17.
  • April 9: FRESHFARM Farmers Market by the White House at 801 Mount Vernon Place NW. Open Thursdays from 11 a.m.-2 p.m. through Nov. 19.
  • May 5: FRESHFARM Farmers Market at CityCenterDC located on I Street NW between 10th and 11th. Open Tuesdays from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. through Oct. 27.
  • May 15: CHoP on Woodrow Wilson Plaza at the Ronald Reagan Building and International Trade Center (1300 Pennsylvania Avenue NW). Open Fridays from 11 a.m.-3 p.m. through Nov. 13.
