Spring Marks Return of Farmers Markets to DowntownDC
By Rachel Rose Hartman
Spring means fresh produce, artisan foods, cooking demonstrations, Community Supported Agriculture programs (CSAs) and more in DowntownDC as four weekly farmers markets open for the 2015 season.
This year, discover new vendors and features including a new option through FRESHFARM Markets to have your CSA delivered to your office each week.
The first markets set to open in Downtown in 2015 are the two FRESHFARM Markets at Penn Quarter and near the White House. The Penn Quarter market, located on 8th Street NEW between D and E streets, will open April 2 and operate from every Thursday from 3-7 p.m. thereafter. The White House market, located at 810 Vermont Avenue NW, will open April 9 and operate every Thursday from 11 a.m.-2 p.m.
Both markets will feature many local vendors including Black Rock Orchard, Cibola Farms, Inc., Clear Spring Creamery, Old World Breads and Sand Hill Farm at Penn Quarter. At the White House, many vendors with prepared food options will be featured, including Chaia tacos, Soupergirl and Straw Stick & Brick Delicatessen (formerly the Three Little Pigs).
A third FRESHFARM Market will open at CityCenterDC on May 5 and operate every Tuesday at lunchtime from 11 a.m.-2 p.m. Barajas Produce, Capitol Kettle Corn & Popcorn Inc., Evensong Farm and Postmodern Foods LLC are among the returning vendors and Gardots Crumb bakery, O Earth Creamery, HEX Ferments and Harmony Creek Farm will be new additions. HEX will be offering their signature “Butterfly Lime” Kombucha in addition to “Sea Kraut,” miso-based Kimchi and more.
This year, FRESHFARM will also be offering a Community Business Partnership Program CSA in which you can get your CSA share of seasonal produce from several farmers delivered direct to your office every Friday. (At least 10 people must sign up per location. Shares cost $30/week and will be offered for 23 weeks).
Regular individual CSA shares will still be offered for $25 for a half share and $35 for a full share that can be picked up from vendors at participating FRESHFARM Markets. [For more information on FRESHFARM Market CSAs visit: http://freshfarmmarketcsa.squarespace.com]
