Tall Grass Could Mean a Tall Fine

Cut your grass lately? If not, you better get busy. Grass and weeds on commercial and residential property in D.C. can’t exceed 10 inches during growing season, ending Thursday, October 31. In addition, several rules apply to vegetative growth, including criteria prohibiting a deposit for trash, or that creates an unpleasant odor or a refuge for rodents, vermin and snakes. The D.C. Department of Consumer and Regulatory Affairs will issue a Notice of Violation to property owners who fail to comply. And if they’re forced to clean the property, violators will be billed for the cleanup cost. Ready to cut that grass now? Report suspected violations by contacting DCRA at 202 442-9557, or email complaints to dcra.housingcomplaints@dc.gov. Send Tweets to @dcra, with or without photos, of properties with grass or weeds or both. Including the exact address in the complaint will expedite the enforcement process. Hey, whatever it takes to keep the city clean, healthy and orderly works!
