Public Space Mapping
The DowntownDC BID uses ArcGIS software and ArcGIS Online to help people visualize what’s happening in Downtown. This technology is quickly expanding and the BID sees it as an opportunity to better inform and notify stakeholders. The BID regularly conducts GIS inventories of physical elements including locations of sidewalk cafes and street vendors.
The DowntownDC BID also uses data to generate their own maps which are shared with relative properties, tenants and local agencies utilized for public events and activity. These include condition maps tracking anything from locations of damaged sidewalks, streetlight deficiencies, downtown tree species, to completed service requests in the Downtown in an attempt to fully grasp everything occurring in the public space. The BID even generates maps and tracks individual constituent inquiries on our Constituent Inquiries Map that are reported, in progress and closed. Additionally, the organization checks on outstanding and remedied problems by conducting QA inspections throughout the BID.
The BID also generates maps for conditions that have an impact on the DowntownDC BID's public safety concerns including street closures for major events like the Presidential Inauguration and the National Cherry Blossom Festival Parade. Additionally, check out our story map of successes, Monitoring Conditions in the DowntownDC Business Improvement District to Enhance Public Space, which explores some of the many resolved public space conditions.
