The DowntownDC Business Improvement District (BID) is partnering with several organizations to provide a series of free trainings for DowntownDC property managers, staff, safety and security personnel, tenants and residents as part of an ongoing commitment to expand emergency preparedness efforts.
See below for a comprehensive schedule of trainings to be offered, with corresponding dates and descriptions of each session.
Emergency Response Plan – July 18, 2019
This training will provide the actions that should be taken in the initial minutes of an emergency. These actions are critical in warning others if they will need to evacuate, shelter or lockdown, which can ultimately save lives. A call for help to public emergency services that provides full and accurate information will help the dispatcher send the right responders and equipment. An employee trained to administer first aid or perform CPR can be lifesaving. Action by employees with knowledge of building and process systems can help control a leak and minimize damage to the facility and the environment. Upon completing this course, our BID partners will be able to identify and assess risk and determine the best course of action to take during an emergency.
Active Shooter Response Training – August 15, 2019, (January 17, 2019 – completed)
This training is designed to provide practical tools and strategies to prepare you to respond to any situation where an active shooter is present. It helps to educate telecommunicators about the many intricate issues and challenges posed by active shooter incidents and their response, and the role the telecommunicator plays in each.
Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) – September 18-19, 2019
The CERT volunteer program trains citizens to be better prepared to respond to emergencies in their communities. When emergencies happen, CERT members can provide critical support to first responders, immediate assistance to victims and can help organize spontaneous volunteers at a disaster site. CERT members can also help with non-emergency projects that help improve the community safety. Training content includes:
- Disaster Preparedness
- Fire Safety
- Medical Operations and First Aid
- Search and Rescue
- Disaster Psychology
- Terrorism
CERT certifications are valid for two years from the date of course completion.

Work Place Security Awareness – October 17, 2019
In a world of ever-increasing risk, no workplace — be it a construction site, office building, factory floor, or retail store — is immune from threats. Risks threaten worker safety, employee morale and your company’s economic livelihood. Some threats are intentional acts, such as sabotage and violence. This course provides guidance to individuals and organizations on how to improve security in the workplace. Upon completion, our BID partners will be able to discuss ways to reduce event exposure and describe specific things that everyone can do to contribute.
