Yea, he may have lost the fight, but Tony “The Tiger” Thompson, a former Safety/Hospitality and Maintenance (SAM) employee, is still our all-around champ! On Saturday, Tony vied for the world heavyweight boxing championship against defending champion Wladimir Klitschko in Switzerland. The 40-year-old Washington native (36-3, 24 KOs) was knocked out in the sixth round. He and Klitschko came face-to-face four years ago for a championship match in Hamburg, Germany. Tony lost that match in the eleventh round. One of the DowntownDC BID’s original SAMs, he was a Safety supervisor and instrumental in setting the positive, friendly tone that is a hallmark of the SAM Program today. Tony resigned from the BID in late 2001 to devote his attention to his boxing career. The 6’5” southpaw first stepped into the boxing ring at age 27. The man has a lot of heart!
