Founded in 1894, the DC History Center — formerly known as the Historical Society of Washington, D.C. — deepens the understanding of the District’s past to connect, empower, and inspire. As the only community-based nonprofit focused on D.C’s history, the institution’s vision is to reach into all eight wards to preserve and elevate the stories of Washington’s diverse people, neighborhoods, and institutions. The Center is a library and museum that includes the Kiplinger Research Library, three galleries, and a museum store. Located in the historic Carnegie Library at Mount Vernon Square, the DC History Center is free to visit.
