D.C. motorists got some good news from the Department of Motor Vehicles last month. Fines have dropped on some photo enforcement and moving violations. But a warning: you still must drive carefully and obey the rules of the road. If you don’t, the fines, while reduced, are still an out-of-pocket expense. For instance, speeding at 11 to 15 mph over the limit is now $92, versus $100, while speeding at 21 to 25 mph over the limit is $150 vs. $200. Failure to clear the intersection and a violation of the “No Turn on Red” sign both now lead to a $50 fine, compared to $100. Why the sudden drop? Because of wording in the Safety Based Traffic Enforcement Emergency Amendment Act of 2012. Visit the DMV website for more information.
