Volunteer Opportunities, Support and Donations
The Downtown Day Services Center has a variety of volunteer opportunities for both individuals and small groups. Check out the descriptions below. Contact us at center@downtowndc.org to volunteer. Staff will help match you with the opportunity that fits your schedule and your interest. Please provide the following information in your message:
- The volunteer position(s) that interest you or your group
- The day(s) of the week and hours of your availability
- Whether your volunteer availability is recurring (daily, weekly, monthly)
Volunteer
Food Service
Clients at The Center will be offered a seated lunch Monday-Friday from 11:30am-1pm. Servers are needed to bring meals to dining tables during that time as well as provide light clean-up assistance. This opportunity is ideal for teams of 3-5 people who enjoy volunteering together. Individual volunteers are also needed for lunch service as well as throughout the day to help provide coffee and snacks to clients.
Laundry
Volunteers are needed to assist guests in operating washing machines and dryers daily at The Center and answer questions they may have about doing laundry.
Clothing
Volunteers are needed to assist guests in choosing clothing from the clothing closet, helping to sort clothing donations and assisting clients in making their selections.
Hosts
Individuals who are looking for more than a one-time volunteer opportunity are desired needed to serve as hosts for The Center. Hosts will familiarize themselves with The Center’s staff and operations in order to best help guests navigate locate the services they need during their visit. Hosts will help guests locate their preferred services at The Center following registration. Hosts escort guests to service provider locations at The Center. Host volunteers will help staff provide a welcoming and supportive environment for guests.
Donate Items
The Center is in need of clothing, socks, underwear, outerwear, shoes, household items, hygiene items, books, games and more. The Center relies on donated items to fill a clothing closet for men and women. This includes seasonally-appropriate clothing, including outerwear and shoes. We currently accept gently-used items, but we are always in need of new items. (Click here to view our Amazon Wish List)
Give
Monetary donations to support The Center and its activities may be made to the DowntownDC Foundation, the DowntownDC BID’s 501(c)3 organization.
